So there we were sorting out a lot of our equipment, when we came across the trusty MiniDisc recorder/player, so we hunted down the MDs that we have scattered around just for old times sake.

It’s such a shame that the humble MiniDisc never really took off here in the UK, I hear that it is popular in Asia etc, but now with the CDRs been so cheap as well as the recorders everyone went for those.

But we still love the trusty MiniDisc, simple no hastle recording and a useful editing system for moving tracks around and delete a track in the middle of a playlist, you can’t do that on a CDR without re-burning every single track ;) So why did the MiniDisc fail, maybe it was how companies promoted i, or not, also people seem stuck in there ways, “what’s that another media instead of tape, it’ll never work!” and how right they were, but I’m sitting here listening to Robbie Williams now on MD and the quality is top notch, especially as it is connected to my amp with a digital cable.

So we salute you little MiniDisc you may be a distant memory to most, be we still love ya and use you ;)

The MD never caught on in the US, either. I kept waiting for it to happen, but…

I always wondered why VHS won out over Beta when Beta’s image was so much sharper and the cassettes were smaller. I guess that’s moot since DVD is now king.

    Will MP3 devices supplant disks?

I STILL use MD’s when I am recording my mixes when DJ’n! It’s so much easier to record all at once and then add track marks after the fact. I can also run an optical digital audio cord from my Mixer to the MD recorder and get top notch audio.

I can still find MD blanks at my local Best Buy but I cringe at the day that I can no longer find them. I will have to record over all of my old mixes!!!
