The SCAM of free MP3 Download Links!
by Karen W. on Jan.23, 2010, under News
A good friend of Remergence, Pixieguts, has recently written an article on the way that some website are harvesting download links from the mass of websites that have artists tracks available for free, they are pulling music from Last.fm, ning and many more.
Not only this but they are also selling the tracks as ringtones, this is an absolute disgrace to us artists and even some of our tracks have been pilfered from the site that we have given permission to to have free downloads, so as with many artists we have now started removing a lot of the free downloadable tracks and making them streamable only.
Don’t get us wrong, we don’t mind out fans getting tracks for free, it’s the blatent disregard of these sites selling our tracks as ringtones and then not giving us a penny for them!
So sadly we are removing all free downloads, except for those at ReverbNation and BandCamp where they are a bit more secure.
Please Read the article by PixieGuts which inspired me to write this post.
Completely agree. Artists need to be supported! Downloads don't cost much money, hopefully there will be a big crack down on this in the near future.:D
You are so right in what you say Ryan. If everyone did this there would be no music. I'm traditional really and I like to have a CD as I like the idea of physically having something for the money I spend. Unfortunately there aren't many people like that now.
This is exactly what I hate the most. These kind of people that are trying to make money from somebody's else work. This is outrageous.
Hi John, thanks for commenting, these people don't realise that our hard work is also our bread and butter, that's why we have taken a lot of the free stuff down and only keeping free tracks etc. at ReverbNation and BandCamp..
The thing is that you try to promote yourself and to offer people something and instead of getting the effect you want you end up loosing more on other side. Sad :(
Hi Karen..so glad to find this post..just saw the Pixieguts article last night too... I have recently found the same problem upon simply searching myself on yahoo or google....there's a site that actually steals music from my own website and offers free downloads and ringtones...http://mp3realm.org....never heard of them or was associated in anyway!!...everyone should check there too... Have a great weekend, Joe
